History of DC/SLA

  • September 30, 1940 - Petition is signed to form an SLA chapter in Washington, DC
  • October 26, 1940 - DC/SLA is founded when the petition was approved by SLA Executive Board
  • November 18, 1940 - First meeting of the Washington, DC Chapter is held
  • 1941 - Scholarship Loan Fund Committee is established
  • 1942 - War Activities Committee is established
  • October 28, 1943 - United Nations Service Center is established in Washington, D.C. DC/SLA members open, staff, support, and supply the United Nations Service Center Library, staffing it until its closure in 1947
  • May 29, 1945 - First meeting on library automation, a demonstration of circulation record control with IBM punched cards
  • 1947 - Archives Committee is established
  • February 1, 1958 - First New Members Reception and cocktail party at the Army Navy Club
  • May 27-June 1, 1962 - SLA Convention is held in Washington, DC
  • Spring 1967 - DCSLA and DCLA begin a series of annual continuing education workshops, known as the Joint Spring Workshop
  • January 1971 - Formation of the Joint Venture to publish the eighth edition of the Library and Reference Facilities in the Area of the District of Columbia, Mildred Benton, editor
  • 1971 - Government Relations Committee is formed, with Mary Huffer appointed first Chair
  • January 1, 1981 - DC/SLA joins Council of Governments Library Council
  • August 1985 - SLA Headquarters moves to Washington, DC/SLA raised $10,000 to help purchase the building
  • September 1987 - Student Group is established at CUA
  • March 1989 - Chapter membership exceeds 1,000!
  • 1989 - the Chapter Board establishes its own Awards program
  • May 1989 - First Board of Directors' Award is given to Mary K. Feldman
  • February 1990 - First Member of the Year Award is given to William B. Neff
  • 2015 - DC/SLA turns 75!
